BEST 10 TYPES OF CEMENT USED FOR CONSTRUCTION

Cement is available in various types which are used for different purpose. The principal types of artificial cement are given below:

1. Ordinary Portland Cement

It is general purpose cement suitable for the construction of all engineering works. It is used for making brick masonry, used for plastering. It is also used for making water supply tank, reinforced concrete work etc.

Following are the properties of ordinary Portland cement:

  • It is residue does not exceed 100% when tested on Sieve No. 9.
  • It is expansion is not more than 10 mm from unaerated cement and not more than 5 mm from aerated cement.
  • It is initial setting time is not less than 30 minutes and final setting time not more than 10 hours.

2. Rapid Harding Cement

It contains large proportions of time and other constituents are the same as for ordinary Portland cement. At a higher temperature than that of an ordinary cement it is also ground finer than ordinary cement and costs a little more. It is also known as high early strength cement. The high strength at early stage is being due to finer grinding, burning at high temperature and increased lime contents in the composition.

Following are the properties of rapid Harding cement:

  • It is residue does not exceed 5% when tests on sieve No. 9.
  • It is expansion is not more than 10 mm for unaerated cement and not more than 5 mm for aerated cement.
  • It is initial setting time is not less than 30 minutes and final setting time is not more than 10 hours.

3. Low Heat Cement

It contains a low percentage of tri-calcium silicate which hydrates quickly and a higher percentage of di-calcium silicate which hydrates slowly it contains less lime then ordinary Portland cement. This cement possess less strength.

Following are the properties of low heat cement:

  • It is residue not to exceed 5% when tested on sieve No. 9.
  • It is expansion should not more than 10 mm for unaerated cement and not more than 5 mm for aerated cements.
  • It is initial setting time should not be less than 60 minutes and final setting time should not be more than 10 hours.

4. Quick setting Cement

It contains smaller percentage of retarder (Gypsum) or the setting action is increased by adding a small percentage of aluminium sulfate, dusting grinding. It is costlier than ordinary cement.

Following are the properties of quick setting cement:

  • It is ground much finer than ordinary cement:
  • It is initial setting time starts with in 5 minutes after addition of water and at becomes stone like hard within 30 minutes.

5. High Alumina Cement

It is manufactured by freshening a moisture of bauxite and lime and grinding the clinkers so formed. The alumina contents shall be more than 32% and the ratio of alumina to lime is in between 0.85 and 1.3. It is not only a rapid Harding cement but also a higher ultimate strength cement.

Following are the properties of High Alumina Cement:

  • It is chocolate in color.
  • It is initial setting time is not less than 30 minutes and final setting time not more than 10 hours.

6. Blast Turnance

The blast Turnance slag which is a waste product, obtained during manufacturing iron, contains all the basic elements of cement i.e., Silica, Alumina, Lime and other. It is crushed preliminary to a granulated from which is than intimately mixed with cement clinkers in the proportion of 65% of slag to 35% of clinkers and both ground together to from cement. It is cheaper than ordinary Portland cement. It is more resistant to attack of weathering agencies. It has lower evolution of heat.

Following are the properties of Blast Turnance Slag cement:

  • It is color in blackish grey.
  • It is initial setting time is not less than 30 minutes. And final setting time is not more than 60 minutes.
  • It is should not have an expansion of more than 10 mm

7. White Cement

This is just a variety of the Portland cement and the whiteness is obtained by reducing the iron oxide contents to a minimum.

It is generally made from pure white chalk and clay free from iron oxide. It complies all the requirements for the ordinary Portland cement. It is costlier than ordinary Portland cement.

8. Colored Cement

These cements are manufactured in the same way as ordinary Portland cement and suitable pigments 5 to 10% are added to it before the cement is finally ground.

The commercial term for colored cement is ‘colorete’ some factories in India have are known as ‘Rainbow cement’ white and colored cement in a wide range of colors under the trade names ‘silicate’ and are also available in India. This cement more or less comply with all the requirements of ordinary Portland cement.

9. Calcium Chloride Cement

It is a type of Rapid Harding Cement. The development of strength is increased by the addition of about 2% calcium chloride to the ordinary Portland cement and by grinding finer than ordinary Portland cement.

10. Portland Pozzolana Cement:

Pozzolana is an essentially siliceous materials containing clay up to 80% in the manufacture of this cement about 80% of pozzolonic materials is added to the ordinary Portland cement clinkers and the mix is thoroughly ground. It has almost the some properties as that of an ordinary Portland cement.

Following are the properties of Portland Pozzolana Cement:

  • It is color in brownish.
  • It is initial setting time is not less than 30 minutes. And final setting time is not more than 60 minutes.
  • It should not have an expansion of more than 10 mm.
